May 2008 Issue & Supplement

These are uneasy times for investors. So why not make it just a little easier on yourself? We’re in the midst of a steep downturn for housing, and a credit crunch to boot. The economy is soft; oil prices, sky high. And on top of it all, an election looms, with the prospect of higher taxes by 2010, if not sooner.

Yet with all these (legitimate) things to worry about, it’s still possible to chart a safe — and reasonably calm — financial course through today’s troubled waters. In this month’s visit, I’ll show you how.

Waiting for some good news! Stock prices rallied modestly this week with the blue chip Standard & Poor’s 500 index posting a gain of a little over 1%. But the market is still waiting for some good news to propel it out of this low area we’ve been in for the past month.

Time for a lift! Yes, we’ve got to admit that this stock market has defied a lot of historical patterns lately. January is typically one of the better months of the year, and as of tonight, we’re suffering the worst January in more than a century. But the selling now looks way overdone, on both a technical and a fundamental basis.

Big test, coming right up! We have to admit, we aren’t thrilled with the way the old year is winding down on Wall Street. After November’s counter-seasonal drubbing, we were hoping for a better December than we’ve had. It may be that an exceptional amount of tax selling has put a drag on the stock market right down to the finish line in 2007.

Don’t miss the Big Picture! Stocks churned this week, with the Dow and S&P pulling back while the NASDAQ advanced. Chances are, March will bring a more significant dip than we’ve seen in recent months. Make no mistake, though. The minor weakness ahead will spell a major buying opportunity.

Still hanging on! Stocks bounced back again this week, erasing all of last week’s losses and then some. In fact, the blue chip S&P 500 index finished today at its highest weekly close since September 2000.

A Clink of the Glasses to Warren

With the holidays approaching, now is as good a time as any for us to toast a gentleman who has fattened our purses this year, Warren Buffett. Today, shares of the multibillionaire’s Berkshire Hathaway holding company touched a new all-time high.

Healthy dip! Stock prices pulled back this week after five straight weekly gains, but it was hardly a washout. In fact, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index gave up less than 1% from last Friday’s close. So far, it looks as if the market is undergoing a normal, and very healthy, midcourse “correction.”

Nine Out of Ten

Trees don’t grow to the sky, but this one seems determined to grow a little taller! We’ve just wrapped up another astonishing month for the stock market — the ninth winning month this year out of 10 for the S&P 500 index.
