Hugging the script! Stock prices ticked up this holiday-shortened week — fulfilling our expectations for a bounce before the summer doldrums set in.

Now for the rebound! Stock prices wandered back and forth this week, closing little changed from last Friday. Don’t be fooled by the indecisive action, though. Beneath the surface, the market is preparing for one last good rally. Then comes the “summer siesta.”

Quite a quarter! Stock prices bounced back strongly this week, handing the blue chip S&P 500 index its best quarterly percentage gain since 2004. We’re very impressed with the market’s resilience here, and we think it bodes well for 2007. Still, as value-oriented investors, it’s important for us to maintain our price discipline.

Cyclical Surprise

The stock market can do almost anything it wants, anytime. If you needed proof of this bedrock principle, the past quarter’s trading should lay any doubts to rest. Assuming no disaster occurs tomorrow, we’ll close September with the strongest quarterly percentage gain on the S&P 500 since 2004.

Haste makes waste! Stock prices took a nice bounce this week, lifting the Dow industrials to within striking distance of an all-time (that’s ALL-time) high. We’re encouraged by the market’s action, because it tends to confirm our thesis that the next two years will be a wonderful period to own stocks.

A Healthy Pause

Today’s stock market action was encouraging. After the sharp bounce we’ve enjoyed off the August 26 bottom, share prices were entitled to a breather. We got one today — a “minor pullback” of the sort I described on Tuesday’s posting. I hope you took advantage of it to pick up a few more stocks or funds for your own portfolio.

Breathing a Lot Easier

I like the newfound energy I’m seeing in the stock market. It’s looking more and more probable that at least some of the leading market indexes will touch new highs for the year later this month.

Beam Me Up, Scotty!

The stock market finally looks as if it’s ready to mount a decent rally. Bond yields have nosedived over the past few weeks, improving the relative valuation of most stocks. Meanwhile, the pullback in the major stock indexes is gradually losing “oomph,” a sign that a tradable bottom should now be at hand.

The Long-Term Investor's Dilemma

We’re at the point in the stock market cycle where long-term investors face some tough choices. The “summer siesta” I told you to expect is almost over, and a brisk rally into the first half of September should soon get under way.
